Hellos and Goodbyes for a New Year.
Self-help is a big movement these days, and I’m grateful for it. For me, coming from a medical family, it’s always been there and I love that. There can be a million voices in our heads telling us to do this, and don’t do that, but I hope you know deep down inside whats for you and what’s not. If not, reach out to someone who has known you a long time, and take time to reflect. As we enter a new year that is full of possibilities, having survived many culture shifts like Covid and societal unrest, it is important to be grounded in who you are and wisely planning for the next chapter. It is a time for everyone to be at their best so that we can all get through it. We have it so great right now in the plethora of information available and options for healing. Life is expensive and uncomfortable too, and there are many options we don’t have that we wish we did, but what we really need is really very basic.
Right now is the time to set goals. That’s the tradition and there is a reason. Of course, at any time of year, you can stop and reflect and change direction, edit or restart. In fact, this may be the first time in a long time that I have come back to the New Year’s tradition, but here we are now and it’s soooo fun.
So, what are this year’s goals? How do you plan to grow? People say, “set intention” in the psych world these days. What does that mean? It is mostly a fancy way of saying the all encompassing thing I am trying to say here: Look up, look out, look inside, look all around, who are you and who do you want to be? How can you get there? What is your purpose? What is your WHY? What gets you excited? What are your core values? How are you going to make it happen, and when (because a true goal has a deadline)?
Here’s what I’ve come up with so far for me:
Love is the unifying principle. It informs motives, decisions and actions.
Creativity is what sets me apart and allows me to shine and feel most connected to the Creator.
Authenticity is the humbling truth I must walk in to feel free.
Health is the daily goal, the focus of the work being done in the trenches. Mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical.
Simplicity is the other side of the scale keeping it all in balance.
Those ideas are very basic, but like I said, it’s time to revisit the basics this year and keep it simple stupid (KISS : - x).
Here’s what my more specific Intentions are:
Having lost the 50 lbs I set and goal and lost last year, now it’s time to reach for optimal health for make sure I stay in those healthy habits I set up.
Finish my meditation art book.
Do more networking events and be more present on social media.
Continue to enjoy what I have and what I do. I believe the secret to happiness is falling in love with yourself and what you have.
Things I’m really enjoying this year and plan to take into next year:
My new obsession with hot tea.
My obsession with seeking balance.
Learning about the science of healing.
My daily art practice!!!
I challenge you to also pick up your journal today and start a practice that is new and vulnerable. There is nothing better in the world than knowing you are On your way to a better place and being really grateful for the path you walked down. Cheers to you and yours and journey well!
XOXO, Brooklyn
